Mount Shasta: Train Graveyard

This is our fourth consecutive summer vacationing with Dwayne’s oldest brother’s family.  Their kids are 17, 15, & 12, perfect ages, in my opinion.  This year, we rented a house in Mt. Shasta in northern California.

This was the view….from just about everywhere we went.  (Lake in front optional.)

We stayed in a quaint & dinky town called McCloud.  Right away, we ran into a few of McCloud’s biggest fans who were very familiar with all the good bike rides in the area.  They pointed us to a spot outside of town about 3 miles that was basically a graveyard for the old trains that had been shut down a few years ago.

One of the kids in the trailer got their sticky hands on my camera and took this excellent shot of my bum through mesh.

All the kids were starving after being towed for three miles.  Forget the trains; we need granola bars STAT, Mama!

We did explore the insides.  I bet you can guess what the young folks of a small town do on Friday nights.  A place you can only get to by biking or walking.  Pretty safe from too many adult interruptions.

This is cousin Kara, who really is this cute and funny all the time.

This was the coolest—the plow car!  It’s all wood and slightly better preserved on one side than the other.  Wesley is trying to give it scale, but it’s really impressively big.

It attached to the front of the engine.

This is cousin Isaac.  I’d love him even if he wasn’t my nephew, simply because Wesley adored him from the first day.  He’s 15 years older than Wes, and very willing to alternate between playmate and personal carrier.

Wesley got a little help from everyone.

Uncle Dan finally had to drag Wesley away, not from the allure of the trains, but the lure of the dirt piles everywhere.

A good adventure for the first day, before going shopping for a week’s worth of food for 10 people!
