Butterflies. Finally.

We were thrilled when we got up this morning and found our first butterfly!

VACATION 002

The first thing we did was go outside and pick lots of flowers to put into the butterfly house.  Then we mixed up sugar-water and put drops on the flowers and leaves.  Can you see the butterfly’s orange wing hidden here?

VACATION 006

I had at least as much fun as the kids with this project.  Over the next day, two others “came out”, too.  (I do not have high hopes for the fourth cocoon.) I always missed the magic moment and came back only to find an empty cocoon and a new butterfly.  One of the things I learned from the materials that the blood-like spots over the mesh is meconium (basically like poop, but not) of the leftover colors and other material unused during the metamorphosis.  Fascinating!

VACATION 014

We’ll raise ladybugs next!
