Lost & Found: Kyla’s Manners

10-6 Kyla 2NOTE:  I was out for an evening of fun and education with my girlfriends while Dwayne had all three kids.  He told me this story when I got home and then later wrote it down for his mother. ~Denise

Kyla & Piper have been really cute lately.  I have a funny story about Kyla.  She was having really bad manners one evening – getting up & down from her chair, leaving the table without being excused, not 10-6 Kyla 3eating her food, etc.  I corrected her several times, then – unexpectedly! – she spit at me.  Now, she failed to actually spit on me because she doesn’t know how and all she managed to do was dribble spit down her pajamas. [Editor’s note:  She spits like her mother.]  But this is, of course, wildly inappropriate behavior so I sternly sent her to her room without dinner.  She cried for a while, then I went in to discuss the situation with her.  Through tears she explained that she had lost her good manners.  I asked her where she had lost them.  S10-6 Kyla 1he said maybe they were under her bed.  So I asked her to go look.  She crawls under her bed and I hear this muffled exclamation “Oh! Here they are!  Look daddy, I found my good manners.”  After that she was an angel for the rest of the night.  There are times my daughters melt my heart.

Pumpkin Patch

We went pumpkin patching today with Rochelle and Mabel at a farm that advertised it’s experience as “nothing scary”, so it was just right for Rochelle and I. And, um, the kids.

Nothing scary about this mural. (Sorry, Rochelle. I do have a great picture of Mabel smiling, but my kids aren’t. And this is my blog.)

Feeding the fowl was only scary when Mabel got bitten by an over-eager duck and Kyla thought she might get bitten. Piper is not scared of anything.

The corn maze wasn’t scary. It was short and thin—easy to see through. The scarecrows were most friendly.

The wagon ride was exciting! Nothing scary.

The pumpkins were fun to choose. Nothing scary.

The piglets born just a day earlier were the cutest little pink things—not a bit scary!

Latest Home Improvement

The front of our house back in August. This is the “before” picture.

100

Usually, we plan our projects over time, making absurdly low estimates of time and cost and then we change our plans as we go along to fit the true situation, not what we expected.

This project was different. One evening, Dwayne took a stick to the joists supporting our very narrow, mostly useless front deck. This is what happened.

104

Our deck went from “of course it’s fine” to “whatever you do---don’t use it!” Luckily this happened right at bonus time.

Let me say, if we had an unlimited supply of money and less social guilt, we’d spend almost all on home improvement projects. And we definitely like hiring people who are far, far more capable than either of us!

So we brought out a few contractor and considered options, including completely eliminating the deck, taking out the sliding glass doors and redoing the windows there. That would probably have been the cheapest option, but we’d still spend a lot of money and have much less than we started from. We could simply replace the deck, but a 4 foot wide deck (like the original) is pretty useless. So we decided to replace it with a 10 foot deck, giving us lots and lots of space overlooking the best part of our view. As we were looking at that cost, I had the great idea of asking about some of the newer manufactured “wood” decking. Simply by doubling the original price (!!), I could have a deck that would never need to be sanded, stained, scraped, replaced, or painted again. I don’t mine the first 4 so much, but I hate hate HATE painting the square railing posts. And I have done them all, twice, in the last seven years. Suddenly, doubling the cost seemed like a bargain.

Again, a before picture, as seen from the living room.

Then the original deck was removed. It gave the living room a surreal infinity edge feel.

Then it was framed.

September 093

Quite precisely.

September 094

Then the Trex boards and railings went up. (We had ordered round black railings, but received the square ones instead. I was gone the day the railing was installed and decided that it wasn’t a big enough deal to complain about. It’s still a good look.)

Finally, our new deck is done. It leads to a few more future projects. There’s no point in having a garden under the deck now as sun will never reach it. And it’s time we put in a short stairset from the front walkway down to the patio. And the area under the deck might be a great place to put some plastic “roofing” to make it a protected outdoor area. But even if it stays just like it is, we love it and will get a lot of use from it. Starting next summer.

A query: has anyone reading this ever had a contractor who will be working more than 2 days actually show up every day on time? Or call if they don’t? We loved this contractor but he still wouldn’t show for a few days and only offer an explanation or an update after I tracked him down. This 3-4 day project took 3.5 weeks! I have never had a contractor not live down to this reputation.

Bathing for Geniuses. And Their Mothers.

The girls have been driving me crazy at bath time. I put them in before dinner time so that by the time Dwayne gets home, we can have dinner together, brush teeth, and go to bed by 8pm. But it’s been getting hard to cook dinner and care for Wesley when I have girls taking turns screaming, “MOMMY!” Someone has touched someone, or poured water on the other, or isn’t sharing a toy, or..well, you get the picture.

So I came up with the genius idea of putting them in separate tubs in the bath tub. They were so excited because, as Kyla put it, “We don’t have to fight anymore” (my sarcastic italics).

They didn’t last five minutes before they couldn’t stand to be so far apart, so Piper got in the bigger tub with Kyla. Where they played happily together. For another three minutes….’

“MOMMY!!!”

My Favorite Views

The new deck wasn’t quite finished when we christened it with a picnic lunch.10-1 backyard picnic 1

What I really like about the new deck is the better view…of my darling girls having a picnic on the grass.10-1 backyard picnic 3

Zooming in on my girls sharing. And not fighting. Sigh of happiness.

Kyla’s not actually sharing her apple slice, but I have a perspective that makes it look so!

Finally, I get to join them and Piper makes room form me next to her.

Satan’s Handmaiden

By tomorrow, I probably won’t mean this, but it was quite the afternoon/evening with Piper.

Piper is the undisciplinable child.  She is so darn cheerful that there is little we can do in the way of consequences that has any effect on her.

Today she got so good at taking off her door handle (the slippy child-proof cover that keeps children from opening doors) that she could remove it faster than I could put it on.  After no nap and doing  at least one hundred things that drove me crazy, including picking up her baby brother and then dropping him… IN THE BATHTUB, I put her to bed an hour early.  But I couldn’t keep her there.  Here was my solution.

I had to add the second box after I caught her back in the bathroom, back in the bathtub while my back was turned.

I suspect this blockade only worked because she was exhausted and lost consciousness before she could regroup.

So I took the camera around to capture the reasons I even have children.

And here she is the evening before with her current favorite person, Uncle Keith, Aunt Julie and Parker.10-4 Kids 01810-4 Kids 01910-4 Kids 021

Oh, isn’t that sweet?!  She’s not trying to drown her cousin.

This is a good moment, too.

In about 7 hours, we’re going to have a fresh start, baby.  Time for me to go to bed.
